This season (2007), the Boston Red Sox hosted Disability Awareness Day at Fenway Park. The day itself was a beautiful event. Many fans with disabilities had opportunities to meet their favorite team; a fortunate few had the honor of joining a player on the field; families with a loved one with disabilities filled the stands in support of one another and their brethren across the nation. But, the highlight of the event
was captured on YouTube. As the poster aptly labeled the video: “The Fenway Faithful join together to support a nervous singer.” You can’t describe it and convey the full effect. You just have to see it. And, it is worth a few minutes of your time to counterbalance all the negative we hear in the news. Horrible events in Louisianna; a racist, fascist dictator from Iran; a football hero succumbing to the worst side of his nature brutally harming innocent creatures – they all need to be covered so we can stand against them, but where is the balance? Let’s watch this. Even, if we don’t go as far as to compare legitimate news stories such as those just mentioned, why is it that Jessica Simpson’s sad display got more play than this story? Surely, this video can get more hits than Beyonce’ falling on stage? (OK, don’t go searching for that one now!) Past those few remarks, there is no need for much humble commentary except to say that this is an example of the good in all of us. Let this example help you remember with gratitude the times when someone supported you – a teacher, a parent, a friend. Take a second and be grateful. Let the film be a tickler to help you notice opportunities to support another. Take a stand – big or small – for someone struggling with courage like this mighty singer.
Or, just take a moment to savor the goodness. It's good for your heart - and soul. |
